At Norterra Dental Care, we offer oral cancer screening for our patients in Phoenix, Arizona, as part of your routine dental exam. This is done to spot mouth cancer or lesions that might be precancerous because finding these early offers the greatest chances for successful treatment. The cancers we check for involve your oral tissues:

  • Lips
  • Tongue
  • Cheeks
  • Hard and soft palate
  • Floor of the mouth
  • Your throat
  • Your sinuses

If your dentist finds signs of oral cancer, there are two options that may be pursued. One, scheduling a follow-up visit to make sure the abnormality is still there and to see if it has changed at all since the discovery. Two, a biopsy may be done to send a cell sample to a laboratory for evaluation.

If you are at high risk for oral cancer, you will benefit from the screening as we can catch it early on. What makes you at high risk for this type of cancer? If you are a habitual tobacco user, whether you smoke it or chew it. If you excessively drink alcohol you are at increased risk, and if you have had a cancerous diagnosis in the past. You are at higher risk for lip cancer if you have a history of heavy sun exposure.
