One of the most common diseases of the mouth is gum disease. But never before have we been able to fight it as we have now. With access to excellent oral hygiene tools, including products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental flossing devices of all types, oral rinses to kill plaque-causing bacteria, and availability of healthy foods for proper nutrition, we are well equipped to fight this disease.

And yet, if you don’t use these tools daily, your mouth will suffer and gum disease can set in. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the oral tissues that results from bacteria in plaque that attacks your smile. Plaque is that sticky bacterial film that builds up in the mouth and needs to be removed daily to keep it from hardening.

Plaque irritates the gum tissue and causes inflammation. In the early stages, gum disease, known as gingivitis at this stage, results in swollen, tender, red and bleeding gums. If gingivitis is left untreated, it will advance until your gums recede, your teeth loosen and fall out, and your supportive bone material deteriorates.

Caught early, gum disease is often reversible and highly responsive to treatment. Stepping up your oral hygiene efforts, combined with a nutritious diet that supports your oral health, and keeping all routine dental cleanings, can turn this disease around. Once it has progressed to periodontitis, you will need to be seen more often for dental cleanings to remove tartar around the gumline, deep cleanings such as root planing and scaling, antibiotics to treat infection, and more.
