Tooth Extractions

wisdom teeth removal with a Phoenix dentist Norterra Phoenix AZ

Our professionals at The Norterra Dentist will always try to save your teeth whenever possible, but sometimes other restorative methods—such as a dental filling or a dental crown—may not be effective. Our dentist may recommend tooth extraction or wisdom teeth removal if you are experiencing:

  • Severe gum disease.
  • Severe tooth decay.
  • An impacted tooth.
  • A fractured tooth.
  • Crowded teeth.
  • Dental injuries.

Regular Tooth Extractions

Here’s what you can expect during a tooth extraction treatment:

  1. Examination: To determine if an extraction is necessary, our dentist will take dental x-rays to assess the extent of the damage which includes the health of your jawbone.
  2. Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is given to numb the affected tooth and surrounding gums. We also provide general sedation such as laughing gas for your comfort.

We understand that extractions can make people uneasy. However, we offer a variety of sedation options so that you can get the treatment you need. Get in touch with us, and we will create a treatment plan just for you.

  3. Tooth Removal: By using a specialized tool, our dentist will gently loosen the tooth and lift it out of place.
  4. Cleaning: The socket is then cleaned and disinfected. In some cases, the dentist may also place a dental bone graft to prevent bone loss within the jaw.
  5. Stitching: Stitches may be placed to help in the recovery process and promote faster healing for your mouth. Dissolving stitches are commonly used.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

After your tooth extraction is complete, we will place a piece of gauze over the extraction site which you will close down on with firm, steady pressure. This will slow the bleeding so that a blood clot can form. Blood clots are a natural part of the healing process, promoting healthy recovery and reducing the risk of a dry socket.

At home, you should:

  • Keep the extraction site clean. Gently rinse the area with an antimicrobial mouthwash two to three times a day. Do not brush directly over your extraction site.
  • Take all medication as directed. Our dentist may prescribe antibiotics and pain relievers. It’s important to take these medications exactly as directed.
  • Avoid strenuous activity. Elevated heart rate can increase your risk of postoperative bleeding and discomfort. Avoid the gym for the first 48 to 72 hours.
  • Avoid hard foods. Prepare your pantry with soft foods such as rice, broth, pasta, eggs, yogurt, applesauce, and even smooth ice cream or sherbert.
  • Do not use a straw. Creating a vacuum in your mouth poses a danger to your healing process as it can dislodge the blood clot and create a “dry socket” which is painful.

Most people can return to work or school within a day or so. If your work requires a lot of lifting or physical exertion, you may need to take a few more days of rest to heal further.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are remnants of our historical past. In the old days, we were much more prone to losing our teeth from decay or injuries. Wisdom teeth would then move in to replace them.

Modern medicine and proper hygiene routines make the need for these adult replacement teeth obsolete!

Because there’s commonly no room for wisdom teeth, they:

  • Can develop a cyst around the tooth.
  • Grow at an inconvenient angle.
  • Pose a higher risk for decay.
  • Trap food and debris.
  • Become impacted.

What Should I Expect From My Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Removing your wisdom teeth can have the following benefits:

  • Pain relief.
  • Prevention of disease.
  • Creation of more space in your mouth.

You will need someone to take you to your appointment and then drive you home. The anesthesia we will use to keep you comfortable during the procedure will last for a few hours after your extractions.
